Ginseng is widely used to improve overall energy and
vitality, particularly during times of fatigue and stress. Some studies show
the potential value of ginseng in normalizing glucose level after meals in
diabetics, stimulating immune function and treating male impotence. The
phytochemical called ginsenosida are the key components of ginseng that are
believed to play a role in ginseng’s acticvity. These compounds are considered
“marker” compound for ginseng to indicate the type and quality of ginseng in a
product. For Asian ginseng, a root powder should contain a minimum of 1.5%
total ginsengosides or 15 mg per gram, while an extract should provide a
minimum of 3% total ginsengosides or 30 mg per gram. For American ginseng, a
root powder should contain a minimum of 2% total ginsengosides or 20 mg per
gram, while an extract should provide a minimum of 4% total ginsengosides or 40
mg per gram.
Because of the vast potential of ginseng in health
optimization, more recent studies have been conducted on the herb and its
health benefits. In a new study, a team of researchers from the United State
(Annals of Neutology, vol 57, pp 642-648) investigated whether a purified form
of ginseng, in which some of the herb’s phytochemicals had been concentrated,
could protect rats from the effects of a toxin that caused severely impaired
movement and loss of neurons. The rats received either the purified ginseng
extract rich in ginsenosides or preparation from the whole root of American
ginseng. Another group were given a preparation of ground leaves and stems
which contains greater level of ginsenosides than ground roots.
They discovered that the concentrated extract had the most
benefits. It significant reduced the induced motor impairment and cell loss in the striatum
(part of the brain), and it completely prevented any mortality. The study
hypothesized that certain ginsenosides may act as antioxidants against the
oxidative damage thought to contribute to conditions like Huntington’s and
Parkinson’s disease, inherited degenerative neuropsychiatric disorders which
affects both body and mind.
In another study, a team from Canada (Canada Medical
Association Journal; 173, issue 9) found that when people who usually suffered
cold took a standardized extract of ginseng root they had significantly less
cold than a placebo group and less symptoms. Thus it was hypothesized that
ginseng has the potential to modulate both natural and acquired immune
responds, as well as fighting cold and flu.
Ginseng in ZHULIAN Products
Generally recommended daily doses of ginseng are 200 mg of
standardized extract taken as 100 mg twice daily, or 1000 to 2000 mg of root
powder per day. These daily doses should provide at least 6 mg of ginsenosides
for American ginseng extract. For the root powders, these doses should provide
15 to 30 mg of ginsenosides for Asian ginseng and 20 to 40 mg of ginsenosides
for American ginseng. ZHULIAN’s premium quality food and baverage and
nutritional products use only the highest quality ginseng root extract of
American and Asian ginseng (Panax Ginseng). Daily consumption of B’Young
Advance Functional Beverage’s Supreme Gold range for example provide more than
30 mg of ginsenosides from a cocktail of American, Asian and Siberian ginseng.
Scott’s Kopi Ginseng with Tongkat Ali / Kacip Fatimah provides more than 0.5 mg
of ginsenosides of Asian ginseng per sachet. Therefore consumption of an
average of 2-3 cups of Scott’s Kopi Ginseng With Tongkat Ali / Kacip Fatimah
and / or daily consumption of B’young Advance Functional Beverage is able to
provide a substantial level of daily ginseng in taken for achieving the many
health benefits of this ancient ginseng herb.
